The book "Los pelotones de la muerte: La construcción de los perpetradores del genocidio guatemalteco" by Guatemalan sociologist Manolo Vela, published by El Colegio de México, received the award for the best doctoral thesis in the field of social sciences and humanities from the Mexican Academy of Sciences in 2009.
